Scampering Squirrel

It was community yard sale day. The sky was overcast and every once in a while there was a light drizzle. It was damp, but not a show stopper, so my husband and I made the short drive into town.

The thing about yard sales of this nature is that there are usually small groups of sales along with gaps of non-participating houses. This results in parking and walking to each of the sales then getting back into the vehicle and driving to the next group of sales. While it’s not real efficient, it does have the benefit of allowing you to drop off anything you do get & not have to carry it the entire time.

We were nearing the end of our allotted time because the hubby had to get home and get ready for work. We drove down a little-traveled, tree-lined, one lane street. There was a little lump that looked rather like a rock towards the middle of the road down on one end. As we got closer, the lump moved and we both realized that it was a squirrel. No one else was on the road, so my husband hit the brakes.

Apparently this squirrel wasn’t used to vehicles traveling on the road, as it just sat there for another moment before it finally started moving. But it was too late, the squirrel ended up underneath the vehicle. I winced and waited for the tell-tale thump as we continued to slow, but there was nothing.

Then we saw a fuzzy squirrel butt dashing out from under the car in front of us (I’m certain that it was screaming as it ran… “Aaaahhhhhhh!!!”). We both busted out laughing, as he scampered down the middle of the road, then off into the grass and up a tree. It turned and watched us suspiciously as we drove to the end of the road.

It was certainly a lucky little squirrel, and hopefully it learned a lesson about playing in the middle of the road. As for us, we finished our excursion without incident, with an occasional chuckle as we visualized the little fuzzy tail dashing out from under the car.
