The Truth is too Harsh

During a conversation, my eleven year old daughter had a burst of genius. She said, “The truth is too harsh.”

I stopped and looked at her, struck by the truth in the straight-forward statement, “You’re absolutely right… you’re absolutely right.” Children have a way of blurting out brutally honest things that most adults don’t want to hear.

Most of you are probably shaking your head and thinking, “What is she talking about?”

We’re always telling our kids things like: “honesty is the best policy”, “tell the truth”, “people don’t like liars”… I could go on. As a society, we tell ourselves and our children that we value integrity and honesty above all else. This is all a lie! Yes, you heard me right… we really don’t at all. The only ones we’re kidding are ourselves and we’re so convincing that the next generation is fooled into believing the same lies.

The real truth is that we live in a society that values lies, falsehoods and deceptions. Yes, we are really a bunch of hypocrits.

Our heros that are worshipped by thousands of people are often overpaid drug users and alcoholics. Often these so-called heros are thieves, child molestors, wife beaters and even murderers.

Some of the most important people in our society are those that wouldn’t know how to do a days work if they had to. They throw or hit a ball around a field, jump into piles on each other or just brag about how wonderful they are.

Millions of fans also worship people who make a living pretending to be someone other than themselves. We watch drummed up “reality shows” that have absolutely nothing to do with reality.

Some of the richest people in our country are those that figured out how to best steal from everyone else. These same people are glamorized because they’re rich and intelligent and we ignore the fact that they are actually just thieves.

We vote leaders into office based on the best lies that they propagate. We know that once they’re in office they’ll quickly forget why we voted them into office in the first place. We say we want change, but when a fresh face shows up, they’re not voted in because they have no experience. Instead we rally in droves behind someone that has been caught in bold face lies and even has openly stolen from us.

We lock up criminals – deeming them unworthy of being functional in our society, but release them because they’re able to hire a lawyer that can lie better than the other lawyer.

We lie and say that we’re not racist as a society and that we’re trying to erase the stereotypes that cause racism; but when we have to fill out any forms (especially government related forms) we break everything down by race. We also make certain things only available to certain people based on race: scholarships, jobs, education.

We say that whites talking bad about blacks is called racism, but blacks talking bad about whites is called “reverse racism”. It’s not reverse anything… it’s all just “racism.” Look through history… the truth is that the ugliness of racism has always existed. American Indians against American Indians, whites against American Indians, English against Irish, French against English, Japanese against Chinese, North Koreans against South Koreans, whites against blacks, blacks against whites, South against North, German against Jews, Jews against Arabs, … the list is absolutely ridiculously endless.

Truth is people don’t like to get along… not even closely related families can keep the peace with each other. Hell, just look at the divorce rate. People that declare that they’ll love each other for life find out that hey can’t stand each other in just a few short years… domestic violence is one of the biggest, if not The biggest crime in America.

We even take lying to a deeper personal level. People cannot face the fact that they’re aging and undergo breast implants, tummy tucks, nose reconstruction, hair implants, and many other types of surgeries. In reality they are lying to themselves about their age and looks.

My daughter was right, “the truth is too harsh.” We really want to be tricked, lied to, and deceived.
